This is the difference between the rates it charges borrowers and the rates it pays savers. In the old days – when building societies were keen to demonstrate their difference from banks – they emphasised how good they were at keeping this figure down. The building society trade body, the BSA, described this key measure back in 2007 by saying: “Building societies have been improving their efficiency and value, best illustrated by the narrowing of their margins. The lower the net interest margin, the more value is being returned to savers and borrowers.”
