A different kettle of fish entirely is the even richer (in potash, particularly) but thoroughly evil-smelling stuff you can make out of comfrey leaves. If you have the stomach for it, you can chop some leaves and stems into a bucket till it is about half full, weigh them down with a brick, top up the bucket with water, cover it and wait three weeks, clothes peg at the ready when you come to dilute it. You can do the same with nettles – and they smell just as horrible. All these "teas" can be applied to the soil around plants or used as a foliar feed.
