Republicans used to be for bigger government, more federal authority, and government spending (incl. the equivalent of handout programs); while the Democrats were for states rights, smaller govt., and less spending and taxation. One of the early attempts at Fed. income taxation was even opposed by a Dem. president who felt that it was unconstitutional. So do, you really want to identify with the Republicans of the day?
