The long awaited electric car had been touted as a reason to keep General Motors around when the U.S. auto industry was failing a few years ago and in need of a bailout. Now that it’s arrived, it must carve out a market amid an existing bevy of electric and hybrid competition, both foreign and domestic. The particular Volt model I’m testing is standard equipped with a price tag just above thirty grand, which places it in the same general range as the popular green-car leader, the Toyota Prius. But while the Prius runs on a simultaneous combination of gas and electric such that you get exceedingly high gas mileage, and most “electric cars” run solely on electrical power, the Volt takes a third path. By default it runs entirely on electric for about forty miles, and if you haven’t recharged it by then, it switches over to gasoline instead. The test unit arrives fully charged, so off we go.
