The Caltech team discovered a fan-like arrangement of inverted channels at the border between the highlands and lowlands. On Earth, inverted channels form when coarse material, such as gravel and pebbles, is transported by rivers and deposited at the bottom of the channel. After the river dries up, the finer material, such as sand, silt, and clay, weathers away, leaving a deposit composed solely of the coarser pieces and with positive topographic relief: an inverted channel.
