Nokia shareholders on Nov. 19 overwhelmingly approved a $7.4 billion deal to sell off the company's Devices business to Microsoft. The deal also allows Microsoft to license mobile technology patents from Nokia. Even Stephen Elop will be heading to Microsoft as vice president in charge of Devices. Whether Elop, a Microsoft veteran, will actually assume that role or step up to CEO as Steve Ballmer's replacement as some rumors have suggested remains to be seen. The deal could dramatically change the competitive balance of the mobile market, as Microsoft stands to learn a lot from Nokia about marketing mobile devices. It will be interesting to see if Nokia products make a comeback under Microsoft's ownership. But at this point, it's an open question of how long the Nokia brand will remain on the mobile devices produced by the division. The deal might even send shockwaves through Microsoft's executive corps, especially if Elop makes a quick step up to the CEO's office. Read on to find out why there is a lot at stake with Microsoft's $7.4 billion acquisition of Nokia's Devices business.
