New research commissioned by my department has identified at least 674 privately funded HE providers currently operating in the UK. Some operate for profit. Others don’t. Two-thirds of them specialise in particular areas, from business, accountancy and IT to the arts or religion. Many fit around students’ lives with part time or distance learning. As you would expect, many of them are small. But collectively they are certainly significant. Between them in 2011-12 these alternative providers educated around 160,000 students.
