Even if one chooses to ignore the excesses of the past week – such as the carnage which occurred on Monday and in which 51 supporters of Muslim Brotherhood died – the coup has set a terrible precedent for the country's transition, as it suggests that a future elected government might be ultimately accountable to Egyptian generals and not the electorate. While much of the damage that has occurred in the past days is irreparable, it should be exceedingly clear that a continuation of military aid to Egypt is nothing short of foolishness.
